BREAKING: Carnival CHAOS as horses RUN into crowd – several injured

The parade was briefly stopped after the horses, which were pulling a coach belonging to the Treue Husaren, were spooked and ran at the crowd.

Police believe someone in the crowd may have thrown a bottle at the animals, according to reports in Germany.

Reports on the number of people injured vary but the Kölner Stadt Anzeiger is claiming a woman was run over by the coach and had to be taken to hospital.

One eyewitness told the newspaper: “As the horse-drawn carriage began to move, we first thought that they wanted to catch up with the procession since a gap had been created.

“Then the horses got faster and faster and we realised they were bolting.

“The coachman pulled the reins as much as possible to stop the horses, but they went faster and faster.

“After about 100 metres they ran head-on into a kind of truck stand, which was standing there in the turn of the road. There were many people to the right and left of it.”

Police have confirmed they animals are now being cared for by a vet.

There have been disputes over the decision to allow horses at the parade, which is the largest in Germany and regularly attracts more than one million spectators.

Following several accidents involving horses in the past and the Cologne Carnival Committee recently brought in stricter rules concerning the use of horses.
