Hackers steal Instagram celebrities' information

A bug in the social media platform Instagram has allowed hackers to collect the phone numbers and email addresses of high-profile users, the company has admitted.

“We recently discovered that one or more individuals obtained unlawful access to a number of high-profile Instagram users’ contact information – specifically email address and phone number,” the company admitted in a statement.

Verified account holders at Facebook-owned Instagram have been informed that their contact information has possibly been leaked.

They were warned to be cautious if they receive phone calls, messages or emails from unrecognised senders.

“No account passwords were exposed,” said the company, adding that the bug had now been fixed and that an investigation was under way.

No intimate images are believed to have been stolen, but contact details for individuals could lead to further attacks by hackers against those individuals.

The incident follows one in 2014 in which nude photographs of celebrities, including Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence, were stolen from Apple’s iCloud service and published on the web.

Ryan Collins, 36, was jailed for 18 months for stealing nude photographs and videos of celebrities as a result of the iCloud hack.

Explicit images taken with the photo sharing app Snapchat were also intercepted and posted online in 2014.
