Liverpool news: Plan revealed to secure £26.5m cut-price deal for Gelson Martins

The Reds are currently weighing up their options with £102million immediately available from Philippe Coutinho’s transfer to Barcelona.

Thomas Lemar and Riyad Mahrez have been linked with moves to Anfield in recent weeks but Arsenal also remain keen on the duo.

Reports have suggested Liverpool could instead turn their attentions to bringing Naby Keita to the club six months earlier if they are able to stump up some more money to fast forward the transfer.

But RB Leipzig boss Ralf Rangnick insists Liverpool have not made an approach to sign Keita this month.

Another player loosely linked with a move to Merseyside in recent months has been Sporting Lisbon star Martins.

And Portuguese publication Correio da Manha claim Liverpool are extremely interested in making a deal happen this month.

The 22-year-old currently has a £53m release clause in his contract and Liverpool are only prepared to pay roughly £26.5m.

But it is said the Reds are prepared to pay more than five times what he currently earns in the Primeira Liga.

Liverpool are reportedly offering him wages worth £4.4m a year which roughly works out at £84,000-a-week.

However, the report goes on to say Sporting Lisbon are unlikely to accept Liverpool’s low bid for one of the team’s star players.

Martins has scored nine goals in 29 matches in all competitions this season and predominantly plays on the right wing.
