M2 traffic at STANDSTILL as lorry bursts into flames on busy motorway

Cars were halted in both directions near Rochester after the HGV burst into flames.

Police and fire crews are both on the scene as huge tailbacks mount on the busy highway.

Smoke was sent billowing across the area as the fire raged.

Video taken by a passing driver showed the cab of the vehicle completely engulfed in flames.

Police said the fire broke out beneath a bridge between Junctions 2 and 3 at around 11.45am.

The A229m which runs across the bridge, has also been shut because of the incident.

Motorists have been urged to find an alternative route.

A Kent Police spokesman said: ”We were called at 11.44am on Tuesday to a report of a lorry on fire below a bridge on the M2 coastbound at Bluebell Hill.

“Officers are currently at the scene alongside the Kent Fire and Rescue Service.

“Both directions of the M2 are currently closed at Junction 3.

“The bridge at Bluebell Hill, which runs over the M2, will also be closed due to the fire and will need to be assessed before being reopened.”
