The best new beauty products from OPI, Jo Malone and This Works

We may be well into August but I still haven’t been on my summer break. Not yet being tied to school holiday dates means

I tend to wait until the prices plummet in September before I jet off for some sun. The only problem with this delayed gratification is that by the time I get around to worrying about swimwear and shorts, the sales are over and the shops are full of more autumnal fare.

While it feels far too early to be contemplating woollies and winter coats (whatever the fashion crowd say about getting them before they’re gone), it never seems too soon to delve into the latest releases in the world of beauty. From peels to palettes, serums to shampoos, there are almost more new products landing on cosmetics counters in the next few weeks than I can keep track of.

So which are the creams of the crop (pun intended)? Let’s start with Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Lash Multi Effects Mascara (£25.50; 0808 281 0228, esteelauder.co.uk).

With its buildable formula of fibres and pigments and a brush that manages to provide volume, lift, impressive length and separation all at the same time thanks to its dual-tip design, this is a quick and easy way to add drama to your look. Jojoba, argan and coconut oils condition lashes and prevent them feeling brittle – and adding a hint of emerald amplification will take you into the new season with minimal effort.

Summer in the city can leave pores clogged with pollution as well as sun cream, so it might be worth considering a peel to leave skin re-energised for the new season.

If your skin is suffering, Philosophy The Microdelivery Detoxifying Oxygen Peel (£44.50; 03456 049049, johnlewis.com) is a two-step refresh that uses charcoal to draw out and absorb dirt, impurities and toxins without stripping moisture before the second step brightens using barley leaf extract, which is rich in chlorophyll to increase oxygen levels and energise skin.

After a summer of BB creams and tinted moisturisers, a return to foundation can feel a bit much, which is where Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Everyday Perfection Bouncy Makeup (£28; 0161 813 2608, elizabetharden.co.uk) comes into its own. Impressively weightless, it uses a network of polymers to mimic the skin’s natural movement while brightening and blurring imperfections.

This Works has super sized its bestselling slumber-inducing products, including Super Sleep (£21; 020 8543 3544, thisworks.com).

This blends lavender, camomile and vetiver, while now promising 191 nights of better sleep per bottle (that’s a pretty precise figure and I haven’t yet spritzed enough to know if it’s accurate, though believe me I’m trying).

There’s something very 90s about Dior Double Rouge Lipstick (£27.50; 020 7216 0216, dior.com), but that’s stilla trend so you can see where they’re going. These lipsticks come in a duo of colours, creating definition for your pout without the need for a separate liner.

There will be plenty of brands kicking themselves for not asking potter and designer Jonathan Adler to work with them before Clinique got there. They are collaborating on an entire collection of stylish make-up must-haves but the key piece is this Chic Colour Kit (£39; 0800 054 2666, clinique.co.uk) – 13 shimmering and matt shadows with four brushes and applicators in a textile case. It’s endlessly covetable.

Don’t let your hands play second fiddle to your face – particularly as they age pretty speedily. The OPI Pro Spa range is inspired by facial skincare and the Protective Hand Serum (£20; 03456 049049, johnlewis.com) is fab, nourishing and protecting, using antioxidant- rich white tea and cupuaçu butter (it’s a Brazilian super fruit) to slow the ageing process.

Whether you want subtle for late summer or smouldering for Bonfire Night, Bobbi Brown Downtown Cool Eye Shadow Palette (£32.50; 0800 054 2988, bobbibrown.co.uk) is an all-matt collection that will help you curate a smoky look for day and evening.

If you want to wash every day but don’t want your hair to suffer, Percy & Reed Hair Perfectly Perfecting Wonder Wash Shampoo (£18) and Wonder Care Conditioner (£18; 0333 014 8000, marksandspencer.com) are worth checking out. Free from sodium lauryl sulphate, the cleanser won’t weigh down the hair and will banish build-up from styling products, while a minute soaking up the conditioner will leave locks nourished and luminous.

Finally, with cooler weather on the way, there’s no better excuse to treat yourself to some new home fragrance as we prepare to hunker down on darker nights. Jo Malone English Oak & Redcurrant Scented Candle (£44; 0800 054 2939, jomalone.co.uk) is the perfume house’s latest release and every bit as decadent as you might hope.
