Alexis Sanchez to Man City: Arsene Wenger makes transfer claim after Chelsea draw

Sanchez has been , with Pep Guardiola hoping to complete a deal this month for a player who is out of contract at the end of the season.

The Chilean started on the bench for the game against Chelsea earlier this evening in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg, with both sides playing out a cagey goalless draw.

Although the 29-year-old’s future is up in the air, Wenger didn’t want to be drawn into a debate over whether the forward didn’t start because of the City speculation.

When pressed for his thoughts, Wenger said: “It is one thing to punish someone individually [Iwobi].

“Was Sanchez anything to do with Man City? No.

“I do not have to justify every decision, I have managed over 1000 games.

“I want him [Sanchez] to stay for longer.

“He is an important player for us.”

When quizzed about whether or not he is aware of Sanchez talking to other clubs, Wenger said: “No. People don’t know him, he is completely focused to play football.

“He warmed up like that and he wants to play football.”

Wenger was also at pains to point out that he cared more about the Gunners’ performance against Chelsea than Sanchez’s contract situation.

He added: “The way he plays is not about the duration of the contract.

“I don’t understand the way you see things. It doesn’t matter about the contract, I want to win the game.”
