Antonio Conte wearing a tracksuit is why Chelsea lost to Burnley – Steve McManaman

But none of them would have the same reason as pundit and former Liverpool star Steve McManaman.

McManaman said the cause of nine-man Chelsea losing their first home game on the opening day of a season in 20 years was the fact manager Antonio Conte wore a tracksuit.

Conte led the Blues to a record-breaking title win in his first campaign in charge, wearing a suit in the large majority of the 38 fixtures.

McManaman thinks the Italian’s attire was a superstition he should not have broken at Stamford Bridge yesterday.

“Once Chelsea went 1-0 down and had a man sent off, they shouldn’t have got to three,” McManaman said on BT Sport.

“They should have been nice and compact and see the game out until half time.

“In the second half they were a different team, they were excellent in the second half.

“I blame Antonio Conte’s tracksuit, if he wears his normal clothes he wins that game today, simple as that.”

An amused BT host Jake Humphrey told viewers: “He’s probably serious, knowing Steve.”

Perhaps tongue in cheek, McManaman replied: “I was yeah.”
