Around 100 firefighters tackle huge fire at Essex warehouse after 'explosions' heard

Early reports suggest there were “massive explosions” with “plumes of thick smoke” rising from the warehouse on Festival Way in Basildon at around 2am on Sunday morning.

Essex County fire service said the building was “completely alight” with flames also impacting a nearby industrial unit.

Images show the building, which is a massive 330 foot by 115 foot, completely engulfed in flames.

Neil Fenwick, the officer in charge of the fire, said: “When we first arrived, firefighters immediately requested extra fire engines to help deal with this rapidlly growing fire.

“The warehouse, which we believe is used for packaging and distribution, contained a large amount of stock and the fire took hold very quickly.

“Firefighters have done an absolutely brilliant job here this morning. They spotted the fire had started to spread to the large warehouse next door and managed to extinguish the fire very quickly and stopped the fire spreading.

“Fire crews had the fire surrounded and under control very quickly. It is thanks to their hard work that the fire has been contained to the one warehouse.

“Firefighters will remain at the scene for some time extinguishing the fire and checking for hot spots.”

At around 5am on Sunday morning, fire services said the fire had been brought under control.

Emergency services said they did not believe there were any casualties.

An investigation to establish the cause of the fire will be launched.
