Coutinho to Barcelona: £118m bid made, five-year deal on offer, announcement this week

Following Neymar’s departure to Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month the Catalan giants are desperately seeking his replacement and Ernesto Valverde has put Coutinho at the top of his wishlist.

Having pocketed £200m from Neymar’s sale, Barca are not afraid to spend big in order to get their man.

But Liverpool are adamant he won’t be sold and have already rejected a bid worth £90m.

However, Portuguese newspaper O Jogo claim Barca have returned to the table with an improved offer they hope Liverpool can’t refuse.

They suggest Barca have offered Coutinho a five-year deal and expect to announce his arrival this week.

Coutinho only signed a new five-year deal with the Reds back in January, which did not include a release clause.

Having helped guide Liverpool to a Champions League spot last season the Brazilian’s head has been turned following Barca’s interest and he now wants a fresh start at the Nou Camp.

Reports in Spain yesterday suggested the 25-year-old would even consider going on strike in a bid to force a move.

Liverpool’s stance remains unchanged but Barca are being relentless in their approaches.

And former England international Gerry Francis believes the only way to satisfy the needs of both clubs is for Liverpool to sell to Barca and request a season-long loan.

“It goes back to the player, really,” he told Sky Sports.

“With Barcelona wanting you it’s something that’s very difficult to turn down with it being the only time you get that option.

“The only way around it in terms of satisfying both clubs would be to let him go to Barcelona and then loan him back to Liverpool for a season.

“At the end of the day I don’t think Coutinho is going to be happy if he doesn’t get the opportunity to go to Barcelona because it’s the right situation sometimes both financially and football wise.

“I think it’s a problem for Liverpool.”
