Laura Muir finshes fourth as Faith Kipyegon wins World Athletics Championships 1500m final

Muir, the European indoor 1500m and 3000m champion, took the race out from the front in an effort to negate the faster finishers in the field.

Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands kicked early but Faith Kipyegon and Jennifer Simpson looked like they had wrapped the race up with the Brit going well in third.

However, South Africa’s Caster Semenya surged past her in the last metres to take bronze with Kenya’s Kipyegon holding on for the win.

“In the final few metres it wasn’t quite in the legs,” Muir said afterwards.

“I did all I could in the race.

“There’s a lot more I can do.

“At the moment [the 5000m] is still on the cards.

“I’m not very experienced in that race – I’ve only run one this year.”
