'Like a BAD relationship' EU Expats rail against Brexit as they prepare to leave UK

Speaking to , the Swiss national, who made Britain her home, said there was a change in mood after – with friends even being targeted with racial abuse.

Having lived in London for 15 years, Babettli Azzone has taken the tough decision to move home because of the uncertainty faced by EU nationals.

She said: “I moved here because of love, not because of love with somebody but with an idea of freedom, integration and compassion.

“And, after Brexit happened I felt like I was in a bad relationship.”

Ms Azzone added: “I have been here for 15 years, I met my husband here, we have two wonderful children who are British.

“I am an interior designer and had my own successful business here, so I also had to start closing down my business.”

With EU nationals flocking back to the Continent, another EU expat living in the UK has set up a website to help those leaving find work abroad.

Marcin Czyza, founder of Expat Exit, said: “Each kind of political turbulence, I have got more people in my database.

“I remember there was a big jump when the Prime Minister said there will be a ‘hard’ Brexit and I saw immediately more candidates willing to register on my website.”

Brexit has seemingly had a similar effect on Britain’s living outside the UK, with currently 1.2 million British people living in European countries.

Figures from the German Government show that last year, more Britons opted to become German citizens than ever before in a bid to stay after the divorce.

Udo Moeller, a spokesman for the German city of Hanover, believes at least 50 to 60 British people will undergo citizenship by the end of 2017.

But while their exact reason for wanting to become a German citizen is not recorded, Mr Moeller said Brexit is a significant factor.

He said: “In the talks with the applicants, however, it has always been clear that the British Brexit decision was the trigger for applying for German nationality and to give up British nationality.”
