Liverpool have wasted this summer not investing more in the defence – Ronnie Whelan

Only Andy Robertson has been added to Liverpool’s back line this summer but he wasn’t even in the match day squad that faced Watford on Saturday.

The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for Virgil van Dijk since early on in the summer.

The Southampton centre-back handed in a transfer request last week, prompting rumours Liverpool could up their interest while Chelsea are also ready to pip their rivals to his signature.

Liverpool were carved open twice from set-pieces against Watford, the second time being a late equaliser following poor defending from the Reds.

And Whelan, who played nearly 500 games for Liverpool, is amazed his former side haven’t done more business in improving their backline.

“The two months which should have been used to improve on the decent defending we saw in the run-in by buying better players has produced nothing apart from £10m Andy Robertson who wasn’t even in the match day squad for Watford,” Whelan told the Irish Independent.

“Going forward, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Firmino were devastating and exciting but at the back, Klopp’s defenders were like amateurs.

“Basic knowledge of defending is absent and for someone who played in front of lads like Mark Lawrenson and Alan Hansen, the drop in standards is shocking.

“This is visible across football. I couldn’t believe what I was looking at in the season opener between Arsenal and Leicester. Every year it seems to get worse.”
