Liverpool star Coutinho slammed for 'downing tools' to force Barcelona transfer

have rejected numerous bids from the Spanish giants for Coutinho, who missed their Premier League opener versus Watford with a back injury.

The 25-year-old attacker submitted a transfer request last week after Liverpool rejected a €100 million (£90m) from Barcelona.

Philippe Coutinho has also been left out of Liverpool’s squad for Tuesday’s Champions League play-off match against Hoffenheim, in Germany.

Former England international Chris Waddle criticised the player’s attempt to force through the transfer.

He told BBC Radio’s 5 Live: “I think he’ll be gone… Listen, a back injury? Wow!

“It’s basically, ‘I’ve downed tools and I want to be on the next plane to Barcelona’.

“If it happened in the next few days he would be available for their first league game.”

When Waddle was asked if he doubts is suffering from a back injury, he replied: “Yes I am.

“He’s done most of pre-season and suddenly he has a back injury and hands a transfer request in.

“Basically, he’s saying it’s time to move.

“Barcelona are a fantastic club, and to play with a Suarez or Messi – we know what Barcelona are all about and it’s upsetting for Liverpool fans.”

Waddle concluded Liverpool shouldn’t force “an unhappy player” to stay at the club, declaring it very hard for clubs to keep their star men when “players hold all the power”.

After Liverpool’s 3-3 draw at Watford on Saturday, manager Jurgen Klopp conceded he had no control over Coutinho’s future on Merseyside.

Under current UEFA rules, the Brazilian’s participation in the play-off round against Hoffenheim would not jeopardise a move in the current transfer window.

The 25-year-old will remain eligible to feature for another club in next month’s Champions League group-stage.
