Conte wanted Van Dijk

22:50: Antonio Conte has revealed Chelsea tried to sign Virgil van Dijk before Liverpool got their hands on the defender.

“This is football. This is life,” Conte said.

“For sure he was our target but as you know this is football.

“We can have a lot of targets but you must be able to reach those targets.

“The transfer market is not simple for any club. Liverpool bought Van Dijk to reinforce his defensive line, and I think Van Dijk is a top defender. And they spent €85million for this player.

“At the same time, they sold very well [Philippe Coutinho] because when you sell a player for this amount of money, and then you have the rest of money to invest and to improve your team. But I think the transfer market is not simple, especially if there is this amount of money.”

Hazard will sign for Real Madrid on one condition

22:30: Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has reportedly promised Zinedine Zidane he can sign Eden Hazard if the club reach the Champions League final.

The west London outfit are desperate to tie him down to a new lucrative deal in order to keep him at Stamford Bridge.

But Hazard’s father recently suggested he is putting off extending his contract in the hope Real will make a move for him in the summer.

And the La Liga giants could lodge a bid at the end of the season, according to Spanish website Mi Otra Liga.

It is said Perez already has plans in place to sign Hazard, but Zidane will have to reach the Champions League final in order for the Real president to push through a move.

Alex Sandro transfer latest

21:56: Juventus have a target lined up if Alex Sandro moves to the Premier League.

Chelsea and Manchester United are both interested in signing Sandro.

A move from the Blues is said to have stalled over his transfer fee.

Juventus want £61. (€70m) for the defender.

And Gazzetta dello Sport claim Juve already have Roma’s Emerson Palmieri on their radar as a replacement.

Juve seem happy to get the deal done, knowing they can snap up Emerson for just £17.6m (€20m) and make a huge profit from this transfer window.

Newcastle transfer update

21:51: Newcastle want £15m for out-of-favour striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Marseille want to sign the Serbia international.

Talks are ongoing but the Newcastle Chronicle claim the Toon are sticking to their asking price.

Bordeaux are also interested in the 23-year-old, who hasn’t scored for the Toon since August.

Rivaldo prediction

21:20: Rivaldo has backed Philippe Coutinho to one day take over from Lionel Messi as the talisman at Barcelona.

“We all know that Messi is the big star,” Rivaldo said

“And he still has three or four more years at the highest level.

“So Coutinho will have time to adapt and demonstrate his true value in his shadow.

“It is always better to arrive when a team is winning, and the current situation also eliminates part of the pressure that Coutinho could have if the team was not working so well.

“Let’s not forget that he has become the most expensive signing in the history of Barcelona, which naturally exerts a pressure on his shoulders.”

Lukaku transfer shock

20:27: Everton offered Romelu Lukaku a staggering contract to keep him at the club last summer, says Farhad Moshiri.

Lukaku joined Manchester United after rejecting a new deal at Goodison Park but for a while looked as though he was heading to Chelsea.

And Moshiri has revealed some strange details regarding Lukaku’s Everton exit.

“With Romelu I wasted two summers trying to keep him. I spoke to him, his agent, his mother,” Moshiri said.

“We tried to offer him a better offer than Chelsea. He wanted to play for Chelsea though – at that time.

“The money that agents can get from players moving club is immense and nothing has to be disclosed.

“Bill (Kenwright) has been like a father to many players, but ultimately it’s the agents they rely on.

“If I tell you what we offered him, you won’t believe it, and we offered him an even better deal.

“His agent came to Finch Farm to sign the contract then Lukaku phones his mother and ‘there was a pilgrimage to Africa and some sort of voodoo that says he had to sign for Chelsea’. What can you do?

“He’d gone to LA and wouldn’t go back, his brain had gone.”

Deulofeu to Napoli

20:00: Barcelona have given the green light for Gerard Deulofeu to speak to Napoli.

Barca seem happy to get rid of Deulofeu this winter, especially now Philippe Coutinho has arrived from Liverpool.

Deulofeu has failed to make the grade since returning to Barcelona in the summer from Everton.

And Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport claim Napoli have been given permission to speak to the winger’s representatives.

Why Conte wants Carroll

19.55: Chelsea boss Antonio Conte wants to sign West Ham striker Andy Carroll because he brings the qualities lost by the sale of Diego Costa to Atletico Madrid, says Shaun Goater.

Goater thinks Conte would like the 29-year-old to hold the ball up and create width for his side, just like Costa did.

“They would certainly have to adjust slightly to get the best out of Carroll,” he said on Sky Sports.

“Diego Costa, a former Chelsea player, he was a big, physical player.

“Conte knows that was key to them winning the Premier League, so he’s probably thinking ‘we need someone who can hold that ball up, so when it goes wide we can dominate’. So that is perhaps his thinking.”

Chelsea done deal

18:46: Andreas Christensen has signed a new contract at Chelsea until 2022.

The Denmark international has cemented his place in the Blues first team this season.

“It feels really good to sign a new contract and I’m just happy to be committed to Chelsea for the future,” the centre-back said.

“I’ve played a lot of games, I’m enjoying it at the club and everything is working well.”

Arsenal transfer update

17:54: Reports that Arsenal want to sign Cristian Pavon are wide of the mark, claims Boca Juniors president Daniel Angelici.

Pavon has been linked with a £33m move to the Emirates.

He is seen as a possible replacement for Manchester City target Alexis Sanchez.

But Angelici says no bid from the Gunners has yet come in.

“I think we’re going to count on him throughout 2018. No proposal has arrived, formal or informal, so far they are rumours,” he said.

“I know what I talked to him when we renewed his contract.

“We made a good contract to make him feel comfortable, we gave him a release clause for these cases.”

Ibrahimovic Man Utd exit

17:27: Zlatan Ibrahimovic could leave Manchester United this month.

United striker Ibrahimovic has suffered a set-back in his recovery from a knee injury and is likely to be out for the rest of January.

His contract expires at the end of the season and Yahoo Sport claim the Swede could be offered an early exit.

They claim MLS and Chinese Super League clubs are keen to sign the veteran.

Zidane sack threat

17:12: Zinedine Zidane insists he is not on the brink of the sack at Real Madrid.

However, the manager admits the next 10 days could define his future.

Real are already out of the La Liga title race and face a tricky route to defend their Champions League crown.

“Zinedine Zidane isn’t a player at Real Madrid anymore. That Zidane no longer exists,” he told France Football.

“Now it’s down to Zinedine Zidane the coach to carve out a career. I’m not protected by what I’ve done as a player at this club.

“I know that one day it [the coach’s job] will come to an end at Real Madrid, so I make the most of it and I do everything I can to be successful.

“I say to myself, ‘if I’ve got 10 days left here, then I’m going to live those 10 days to the max; if it’s six months, I’ll live those six months to the max’. I don’t think beyond that.”

Reds desperate for Keita

17.00: Liverpool are prepared to offer RB Leipzig more money in an attempt to bring forward the arrival of midfielder Naby Keita, says Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett.

Dorsett claims Klopp is not actively looking to sign a replacement for Philippe Coutinho and is instead focusing his attentions on Keita.

“Liverpool are looking to bring forward this deal though, the transfer of Naby Keita from RB Leipzig,” he said.

“They’ve agreed a £66.4million deal remember, that will bring him to Liverpool in the summer.

“But they are prepared to offer more money to get him now but at the moment Leipzig won’t budge.”

Alisson to Liverpool

16:33: Roma are ready to offload Liverpool target Alisson in order to fund new signings.

But any deal is unlikely to be done before the summer.

Liverpool and PSG are the two clubs in for Alisson, claim Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Brazil international could replace Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius between the sticks at Anfield.

Malcom in the middle

16.10: Malcom is at the centre of a transfer tussle between two clubs but Manchester United are yet to make their move for him.

That’s what the Manchester Evening News have claimed, with Jose Mourinho thought to be a big fan of the 20-year-old.

Malcom has made waves in Ligue 1 this season, with a move to United heavily touted as a possibility.

A source close to the player has apparently said the Red Devils are not one of the clubs currently speaking to Bordeaux about him though.

Babb wants trio

15.55: Former Liverpool defender Phil Babb has selected three players he wants the Reds to sign with the money they received for Philippe Coutinho.

The first player he would like to see at Anfield is Monaco winger Thomas Lemar.

Babb also says Liverpool lack a top-class defensive midfielder and has backed a move for Roma star Kevin Strootman.

Babb’s final choice was Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland, who he reckons Liverpool could sign this month with the Potters currently without a manager.

Lemar lacks aggression – Babb

15.30 Arsenal target Thomas Lemar has not got the aggression of the man he could be replacing at the Emirates, Alexis Sanchez, says Phil Babb.

Babb is a fan of Lemar and reckons he has most attributes Sanchez possesses apart from the level of aggression the Chilean shows on the pitch.

“He’s got bags of pace, he can play on either wing,” he said on Sky Sports.

“Very tricky, only about five-foot seven, small, diminutive player. But yeah that pace is key and he’s blessed with it.

“He hasn’t got that aggression that Sanchez has shown but he’s certainly got the tricky and speed.”

Andy CarrollGETTY

Andy Carroll is on Chelsea’s radar this month

Conte opens door for Carroll

14.25: Antonio Conte has refused to rule out a move for Andy Carroll.

Chelsea were linked with a move for the West Ham striker last week.

And Conte is yet to dismiss the talk.

“As I said before the club knows very well which are the position we can improve,” he said.

“I am very happy to work with my players and the commitment of my players.

“If there is a possibility to improve the squad the club knows very well.”

United announce Traore signing

13:43: Manchester United have announced the signing of Aliou Traore – but who is he?

It was revealed on Tuesday that Traore has penned his first pro contract at the club, a month after officially joining the Academy.

Traore is a midfielder who only celebrated his 17th birthday on Monday.

He has been training with the Reds since the pre-season trip to Austria last summer but only officially joined as a youth player on December 3.

Griezmann Barca deal blocked

13.25: Lionel Messi has reportedly told Barcelona to shelve plans to sign Antoine Griezmann following the arrival of Philippe Coutinho.

Spanish outlet Don Balon claim Messi is not keen on the deal because he thinks it would cause disharmony among Barca’s attacking ranks.

He has reportedly raised his concerns with the club and recommended they invest in other areas of the squad.

Javier Mascherano’s days at the Nou Camp are numbered after he vacated his No 14 shirt for Coutinho this week, meaning defensive reinforcements appear to be a priority.

Liverpool transfer newsGETTY

Liverpool have been told to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this January

Liverpool told to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

11.30: Liverpool have been told to spend the Philippe Coutinho money on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Liverpool finally sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona this week after months of speculation.

It brought an end to a saga that started at the end of last season, and they managed to bring in an eye water £142m.

But it begs the question, what do they do now?

Former Liverpool defender and coach Phil Thompson says they need to bring in a quality signing rather than lots of average ones.

“We need to go for high quality,” Thompson said.

“We spent £75m on Virgil van Dijk and we need to look at bringing in a player of the same quality in an offensive role.”

De Gea to Real Madrid

11.00 David de Ggea has instructed his agent Jorge Mendes to begin working on a deal to join Real Madrid in the summer, according to reports in Spain.

A move looked unlikely this summer with Real said to be closing in on the signing of Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

However, Don Balon claim Zinedine Zidane has put a halt on negotiations for the 23-year-old until the summer, prompting De Gea to renew his interest in a move.

The report says the United shotstopper has been in contact with his agent Jorge Mendes and instructed him to open a dialogue with the club.

Liverpool to spend Coutinho money

10.55: Liverpool are considering making a move for Kevin Strootman after selling Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona.

Jurgen Klopp wants to bolster his midfield after losing his best player.

And Strootman would come in an tighten up the defensive unit by shielding the back four.

Italian website Premium Sport claim Liverpool are keen on the Holland international and Roma are willing to listen to offers.

Sanchez ‘no bids’

10.00: Arsene Wenger has claimed Arsenal have received no offers for Alexis Sanchez and he fully expects him to stay until the end of the season .

When asked if the Gunners had received any offers, he replied: “No and I expect nothing.

“I am focused on tomorrow’s game. When solicitations happen you respond to it. At the moment it’s very quiet.

“I have nothing to add.”

Hazard tops Madrid list

09.55: Eden Hazard is Real Madrid’s top target, according to Guillem Balague.

The Chelsea ace is on Madrid’s radar along with Harry Kane – but that interest is unlikely to come to anything until the summer.

“It’s no secret that they need a new goal scorer,” Balgue said on Real Madrid.

“This time last season, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema had scored 20 La Liga goals between them.

“But this time around, they have only scored 10. None of them have managed more than four goals in the league!

“So who’s on the wanted list? Eden Hazard is a top target and the club is interested in Harry Kane even though they are very aware that his emotional link to Spurs and to his manager, Mauricio Pochettino, plus the fact that Ronaldo does not want a similar striker next to him, make the move unlikely.

“But those two candidates are logically only considered for the summer.”

Fellaini exit plan

09.20: Marouane Fellaini has reportedly told Jose Mourinho he will leave Manchester United at the end of the season.

Express Sport revealed the 30-year-old would not be signing a new deal with the Red Devils, having rejected a contract renewal in September.

And fresh reports have suggested Fellaini has now informed the club he will be leaving at the end of the season, opting against a January exit.

The Sun claim he will depart the club on a free transfer in the summer in search of a new challenge, despite Mourinho’s protests.

Bailey’s alert

08.25: Leon Bailey has admitted he dreams of playing in England.

The Bayer Leverkusen winger is on Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal’s radar.

And the Premier League trio will be encouraged by his latest comments.

“Of course I have a dream club, but I will not tell. Basically England was and still is my dream,” he told Bild.

“And if I keep working hard, I’m sure it will work someday. “

The 20-year-old moved to Leverkusen last season and has already seen a huge difference in his game.

“The change to Bayer was just the right step for my development. I am happy here,” he added.

“And we have every chance to get into the Champions League. Europe is our big goal.”

Coutinho’s Liverpool message

07.35: Philippe Coutinho has penned an emotional message to Liverpool fans.

Coutinho completed his dream move to Barcelona yesterday but he still has plenty of love for Liverpool.

“Since the moment I arrived in Liverpool, me and my family have been made to feel so welcome and have made so many friends,” said Coutinho, in a message posted on his Instagram.

“On the pitch and off the pitch, we have experienced the beauty of this club and its fans. In turn, I hope I have delivered memories and moments that have brought happiness to the Liverpool supporters.

“Moving to Liverpool, I knew the club’s greatness and history but what I did learn during my time was the unique heart and soul of the place. It has its own personality and character.

“I leave Liverpool because Barcelona is a dream for me. Liverpool was a dream that I was fortunate enough to realise and I have given five years of my life to it.”

Chelsea stall on Sandro

07.05: Chelsea have stalled on a move for Alex Sandro with Juventus demanding £60m still.

The defender has made it clear he wants to quit Juve but they are playing hardball.

Sandro was one of Antonio Conte’s top targets in the summer and he retains an interest.

He wants the Brazil star to add to the competition with Marcos Alonso impressing at left-wing-back this term.

And Chelsea could move in January but the process is being slowed by Juve who want around £60m despite him losing his place in their team.

Mourinho has problem with Lucas deal

06:00: Jose Mourinho remains interested in bringing Lucas Moura to Manchester United this month, but any potential deal has reportedly hit a stumbling block.

Lucas is surplus to requirements at Paris Saint-Germain having played just 71 minutes of action in Ligue 1 this season.

The summer arrivals of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe have knocked the 25-year-old down the pecking order with PSG keen to cash in.

And ESPN claim United remain the frontrunners for his signature, but PSG want to sell him permanently as opposed to the loan deal on the table from Old Trafford.

Sanchez deal depends on two things

05:30: Manchester City could complete a deal to sign Alexis Sanchez this week after opening talks over a £30million deal.

And there are two main reasons behind Manchester City’s motivation to accelerate the deal – despite Sanchez being available for free in the summer.

City boss Pep Guardiola wants to bring the move forward after seeing Gabriel Jesus ruled out for up to two months with damaged ankle ligaments

The second big factor is the fact Sanchez can play in the Champions League, which has prompted Guardiola and his Etihad bosses to get serious this month.

Express Sport understands the Chile international has been told City will be making a bid for him in the coming days.

Wenger seeks January move for Lemar

05:00: Arsene Wenger has reignited Arsenal’s interest in Thomas Lemar in the fear they could miss out on him with Alexis Sanchez seemingly on his way out of the club, according to reports.

Liverpool have been strongly linked with a move to bring him in as Philippe Coutinho’s replacement.

Monaco have previously stated they have no interest in letting Lemar leave this month, but it has since been suggested a big-money offer could tempt the Ligue 1 into selling up.

And with Sanchez constantly linked with a move to Manchester City, Arsenal are prepared to enter the race once again to sign Lemar.

That’s according to the Mirror, who claim Pep Guardiola’s side are willing to pay as much as £30million to sign Sanchez.

And if that deal goes ahead this month, the Gunners will look to fast-track a deal to sign Lemar under the noses of Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp ready to sign Strootman on one condition

04:00: Jurgen Klopp is ready to pursue a move for Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman if Juventus manage to prise Emre Can away from Liverpool this month, according to reports.

Reports over the weekend suggested Can has already agreed terms on a move to the Serie A giants.

And if true, Liverpool could switch their focus to Roma’s Strootman.

That’s according to Premium Sport, who claim Liverpool have already held discussions with Roma regarding a possible move.

Liverpool have not yet submitted a bid but Roma are said to be open to offers for the Holland international.
