Virgil van Dijk remains unavailable for Southampton amid transfer saga – Pellegrino

Van Dijk handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force through an exit earlier this month.

He has been training away from the first team squad and missed Southampton’s opening game of the season.

And Pellegrino says he remains unavailable but says the club are still not willing to sell.

“The Virgil situation, nothing has changed, it’s the same as last week,” Pellegrino said.

“For that reason I have nothing to say on that. He’s okay but he won’t be available to play.”

Van Dijk was wanted by Liverpool and also generated interest from Chelsea and Manchester City.

Liverpool were ready to pay £70m for the defender but ended their interest when Southampton reported them to the footballing authorities for tapping up.

Yesterday Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger said he wouldn’t be sold this summer.

And Southampton are closing in on a deal for Wesley Hoedt from Lazio but Pellegrini refused to discuss the transfer until it was complete.

“I know the player but I will not talk about the market because when you talk about it, a negotiation isn’t 80 per cent or 90 per cent, the negotiation is either 100 per cent or zero per cent,” he said.

“When he signs, a player is then for you (to talk about), but before that I have nothing to say.”
